【摘要】:Clayelementsarewidelyusedinaviationfuelhandlingsystemstoadsorbpolarcontaminantsthatarepickedupinshipmentsbytanker,barge,orpipelinefromrefineriestoterminals,airports,orboth.Someofthesecontaminantssuchassurfactantsinterferewithefficientoperationoffilter-separatorunitsthatremovewaterfromfuel.Inordertodeterminewhethertheclayelementsarespent,itisnecessarytotestfuelbothintoandoutofclaytreatmentvesselsfrequently.Clayelementsmustbechangedwhennoimprovementinqualityisnoted.Unlesscarriedoutfrequently,suchtestingmaynotdiscloseadeactivatedclaytreatmentvesselintimetopreventfailureofdownstreamfilter/separators.Toavoidsuchfailures,asmallsampleofclayinaclayholdercontainedinasidestreaminstallationthatreceivesflowproportionaltothemainstreamflowisevaluatedperiodicallyusingareferencefuelcontainingaknownsurfactant.WhentheratingofthereferencefuelbyTestMethodD3948indicatesthatthecapsuleclayisbecomingspent,theelementsinthemainfiltervesselarereadyforchange.1.1Thispracticedescribesafieldproceduretodeterminewhethertheusefullifeoftheclayhasbeenexceededincanisterorbag-typeclayelementsthatareinstalledingroundfiltrationunitsofaviationfuelhandlingsystems.1.2ThefieldprocedureutilizestheapparatusofTestMethodsD3948toperiodicallytestasmallclaycapsuleinstalledinasidestreamaroundaclaytreatmentvesselthatreceivesafixedratioofthesamefuelthatflowsthroughtheclayelementsinthevessel.1.3ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Theinch-poundunitsinparenthesesareforinformationonly.1.4Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
